Reform recommendations seen as an important first step by Colorado on-the-job injury attorney R. Mack Babcock
Denver, Colo. – October 29, 2009 – Colorado workers’ compensation insurer of last resort Pinnacol Assurance has recently come under intense scrutiny, prompting the Pinnacol Interim Committee to recommend several bills to the full Colorado General Assembly to reform the quasi-governmental insurer. Colorado workers’ compensation attorneys at the Babcock Law Firm (https://www.injurylawcolorado.com/) support any and all efforts that reinforce the original idea of a no fault system for workers injured on-the-job and applaud the committee’s work thus far.
Over the last several weeks, the committee has heard testimony from employers, employees, doctors and the insurance provider themselves regarding the company’s compensation practices and how they handle on-the-job injury claims. Last Friday, the committee voted on several bills that aim to reduce rates for employers, bring transparency and accountability, end the company’s practice of offering bonuses to deny claims, diversify Pinnacol’s board of directors and enact a Workers’ Bill of Rights.
”Despite their best efforts, claims are not always handled properly at Pinnacol so I’m glad the Colorado General Assembly, who has the power to influence their operations, is finally taking notice,” explains Colorado workers’ compensation attorney R. Mack Babcock. “But it’s also unfortunate the General Assembly has to get involved. Injured workers shouldn’t have to enlist the services of a workers’ comp. attorney like myself to get the help they need as this goes against the original idea of workers’ compensation and a no fault system.”
Pinnacol Assurance is the largest provider of workers’ compensation insurance in Colorado, insuring 57 percent of the market and covering 55,000 businesses and 1.5 million employees. The Interim Committee’s recommendations now go to the full Executive Committee for approval.
