R. Mack Babcock chosen by fellow claimant attorneys to lead professional organization dedicated to representing the interests of Colorado’s injured workers
Denver, Colo. – November 27, 2012 – Besides arguing on behalf of individuals injured on-the-job in Colorado, workers’ compensation claimant attorneys also work with state legislators and other stakeholders to help ensure all injured workers get the help they need. The Workers’ Compensation Education Association (WCEA) is an organization in Colorado that represents the interests of injured workers through advocacy and education. R. Mack Babcock, a Denver-based workers’ compensation attorney and founder of the Babcock Law Firm (https://www.injurylawcolorado.com/), was recently elected by his colleagues to serve as WCEA’s president for the next two years. Babcock has served on the WCEA Executive Board since 2010.
As president of the WCEA, Babcock will have extensive involvement in educating and training members of the professional organization, including being the lead organizer in various legal education seminars held throughout the year. The workers’ compensation attorney will also conduct the organization’s monthly board meetings, as well as have extensive involvement in writing and lobbying for legislation aimed at strengthening the system for compensating workers for on-the-job injuries. Much of these lobbying activities will involve meeting with legislators and testifying before relevant committees at the State Capitol in Denver.
“I’m deeply honored to have been chosen by my colleagues to lead this invaluable organization for the next two years,” comments R. Mack Babcock, attorney and founder of the Babcock Law Firm. “Being president of the WCEA will allow me the opportunity to better represent the interests of injured workers at-large across our state.”
Besides being an educational organization for workers’ compensation claimant attorneys and lobbying for specific legislation, attorneys affiliated with the WCEA also participate in various appeals each year under what is known as amicus status. Amicus Curiae is a Latin term meaning “friend of the court” and is used by groups with specialized expertise or a particular interest in a case. In the case of the WCEA, the organization will ask to participate in a particular case’s appeal that addresses an important issue relevant to workers’ compensation.
“Besides being an educational resource for attorneys and an advocacy organization for injured workers, member-attorneys of the WCEA also lend their expertise in specific cases where a clear answer may not be available to the court,” explains Babcock.
